Western Alliance: Policy for Vancouver Island Transportation

Kerry-Lynne Findlay’s bold vision for a powerful Western Alliance - focused on expanding transportation corridors, strengthening interprovincial trade, and building energy infrastructure across the West, including Vancouver Island.

Highway 1 on Vancouver Island is a vital part of the national Trans-Canada Highway system and must be upgraded. As Premier of British Columbia, my government will implement the following policies:

  1. Trans-Canada Highway 1 between Langford and Victoria (Saanich Centre) will be upgraded to eight (8) lanes to finally eliminate the traffic congestion called the “Colwood Crawl”.

  2. Highway 1 from Langford through the Malahat will be upgraded to four lanes of divided highway (with additional lanes where practical) with high standard safety features to stop needless deaths and accidents.

  3. Highway 1 from Cobble Hill to Nanaimo and the part of Highway 19 with many stoplights called the “Nanaimo Parkway” will be upgraded to freeway standards befitting a G7 country such as Canada.

  4. Lobby the Federal Government to expand port capacity throughout Vancouver Island.
